I’ll admit that my knowledge of Korean cuisine doesn’t extend as far as it probably should. Thus, fully recognizing my faults, I didn’t have high or specific expectations visiting Hoe Lee Kao, which is Reif Othman’s latest (and licensed restaurant), located in Dubai Hills. Yes, this is just around the corner from Reif Kushiyaki, home to some of his more classic and signature dishes. And yes, I think we can all have a giggle at the name.
Upon entry, the interior of Hoe Lee Kao is very similar to the fit-out of Reif Kushiyaki. Unfortunately, even though we’re seated in a booth, this style of interior is much more crowded than I prefer. I feel it’s worth mentioning that the restaurant (like Kushiyaki) has a rather strict dress code, which goes into effect after 6 PM. I personally find this decision ridiculous, as none of the restaurants — bar Avatara, which has yet to open — lend themselves towards a more formal dining experience.
